I originally created How To Be A Pregnant Lady to chronicle my own journey through pregnancy to motherhood. Unfortunately, the trip was cut short, and I miscarried. However, my brief experience with pregnancy and my ongoing experience with miscarriage made me realize just how woefully uninformed many people are about pregnancy and women's bodies.
I also noticed just how frequently pregnant women and mothers - in a society that pays plenty of lip service to them - are mistreated, condescended to, and essentially treated like children themselves rather than the bearers of children. The work that goes into a pregnancy has been trivialized and downplayed by those who don't understand it, and the women who do such work are not thanked nearly as often as they should, but are instead often publicly chastised for their imperfections.
I am trying to use this site to bring attention to the facts, issues, and myths surrounding reproduction, pregnancy, and women's sexuality. I believe that pregnancy deserves respect; and before respect, there has to be understanding. So I am doing my best to start the dialogue that may bring understanding.
I'm also going to continue to use this blog to document my own path to motherhood. My husband and I are currently trying to conceive, which is not as easy to do as they led you to believe in high school!
About The Author
My name is not August. But when I was pregnant, my due date was August 9th, 2008. After my miscarriage, I started using the name August when signing up for new blogs or forums. For the longest time my grief was such a big part of me, and all I wanted to do was wallow in it while I figured myself out. After several months I found myself rather liking the name. So I've adopted it on the site, not because I want to wallow in my first and (hopefully) only loss, but because it is a large part of me. I changed after the miscarriage, and not precisely in a bad way.
My husband's name really is Marcus, and we have three cats and one ancient pet rat. We live in the city and would someday love to move out into a nice house in the country with lots of space for a dog and a real garden.
My one great passion is to become a mother.
